In the Andes of Argentina, vineyards climb to staggering heights — some above 10,800 feet (3,300 meters) — where intense UV radiation, thin air and dramatic day-to-night temperature swings of 68°F (20°C) or more create wines of rare concentration, freshness and complexity.

In Visperterminen, Valais, Switzerland, Europe’s highest vineyard reaches 3,773 feet (1,150 meters) above sea level, where the ancient Heida grape — known internationally as Savagnin Blanc — thrives on steep terraced slopes, producing wines of extraordinary minerality and elegance.

The Americas' Highest Vineyards — Salta & Jujuy, Argentina

Where Winemakers Turn Altitude Into Art

In the remote valleys of Salta and Jujuy, at elevations reaching beyond 6,560 feet (2,000 metres), lie some of Argentina’s most extreme vineyards — Finca de los Viñedos Imposibles.

Nearby, Bodega Colomé — the visionary creation of Donald Hess — stands at 10,200 feet (3,111 metres) above sea level, producing extraordinary Malbec, Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc that bear the hallmark of one of the world’s most extreme terroirs.

Higher still, in the Quebrada de Humahuaca, Jujuy, Claudio Zucchino’s Finca Moya reaches 10,922 feet (3,329 metres) — the highest vineyard in South America and the second highest in the world — where his organic wine Uraqui is aged for eight years in the Cava Mina Moya, the highest altitude wine cellar on earth.

Bathed in intense Andean sunlight, cooled by dramatic overnight temperatures and shaped by ancient soils, these vineyards produce wines of breathtaking concentration, vivid freshness and unmatched character.

High above the Rhône Valley, on steep terraced slopes carved into the mountainside, lies Visperterminen — Europe’s highest vineyard, reaching 3,773 feet (1,150 metres) above sea level.

Here, the ancient Heida grape, one of Switzerland’s rarest indigenous varieties, has been cultivated by hand for centuries on slopes so steep that no machinery can reach them. Every bunch is harvested by local families who have worked these terraces for generations — a living testament to human determination and alpine craftsmanship.
